FAQs: Florida Lunch Debt
Why is school lunch debt an issue in Florida?
School lunch debt builds when families cannot consistently cover the cost of school meals. In Florida, many families fall just outside federal assistance guidelines but still face real financial pressure from rising costs. This campaign exists to help eliminate school lunch debt and close that gap.
How many children are affected in Florida?
Food insecurity impacts a significant number of children across the state. In Florida, roughly 1 in 6 children face food insecurity, meaning they do not always have reliable access to enough food. This is one of the key reasons efforts to eliminate school lunch debt are so important.
Why don’t all students qualify for free lunch programs?
Eligibility for federal meal programs is based on strict income thresholds. Many working families earn just above those limits but still struggle with everyday expenses. These are the students most at risk of accumulating lunch debt and the focus of efforts to eliminate school lunch debt.
Eligibility is based on federal income limits. For a family of four, free meals are available at about $40,500 or less per year, and reduced-price meals up to about $57,700. Families just above these limits often still struggle — and are most at risk of lunch debt.
How does lunch debt affect students?
Lunch debt can create stress, embarrassment, and stigma for students. It can impact their access to meals and their ability to focus in school. Working to eliminate school lunch debt helps ensure every child can learn and participate fully.
How does Lunch It Forward help in Florida?
Lunch It Forward partners directly with public schools to help eliminate school lunch debt by applying donations to student meal accounts. This allows students to receive meals without stigma or interruption.
