School lunch debt is not just a school issue. It reflects the financial pressure many working families face every day.

In Florida, an estimated 16% of children face food insecurity, meaning roughly 1 in 6 children do not always have reliable access to enough food. Feeding America also reports that many food-insecure families may not qualify for federal assistance programs, leaving students at risk of accumulating unpaid meal balances.

When families fall just outside assistance guidelines, unpaid meal balances can build quietly over time. That debt may seem small on paper, but it can create real stress for students and families. This campaign exists to help eliminate school lunch debt and close that gap.

Florida is an important part of this work.

Florida is personal to me — it’s my home state and where the inspiration for Lunch It Forward began, rooted in my grandmother’s belief that no child should go hungry.

Communities across the state are home to hardworking families navigating rising costs and everyday financial strain. At the same time, the need is significant. Feeding America estimates that people facing hunger in Florida would need over $2 billion more per year to meet their food needs.

This campaign is about responding with compassion, dignity, and practical support — one school and one student at a time.
