School lunch debt is not just a school issue. It reflects the financial pressure many working families face every day.
In Georgia, an estimated 19.6% of children are food insecure, or about 1 in 5 children. In the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s 29-county service area, 16.5% of children are food insecure, or about 1 in 6. Feeding America also reports that 68% of food-insecure Georgians may not qualify for SNAP, which helps explain why many families can still struggle to keep up with school meal costs.
When families fall just outside assistance guidelines, unpaid meal balances can build quietly over time. That debt may seem small on paper, but it can create real stress for students and families. This campaign exists to help close that gap.
